Things to see and do

10 things you must see and do on Santorini

  1. Visit the volcano and swim in the hot springs. A 4 to 6 hour boat trip will allow you to catch some unique scenery: ash, hot springs and magnificent views of the main island of Santorini.
  2. Romantic dinner on the Caldera. Choose a quiet restaurant by strolling through the narrow streets of Fira, and don't be afraid to get a little lost in the tiny, less touristy streets facing the Caldera before choosing your restaurant. Wherever you sit you will not miss the view, which is breath-taking from every building on this side ...
  3. Visit the small villages inland, away from the tourists. 4 destinations not to miss: Emporio, Finikia, Megalohori and Pyrgos. Countless blue doors typical of Santorini, small squares offering a slightly calmer atmosphere in inland villages, walks in the thick of the small streets lined with white houses... there is also plenty to do outside Fira and Oia. And from time to time, between two houses, you catch a magnificent view of the west side beaches.
  4. Swim at the Red Beach in May-June or September. Santorini offers yet more unique scenery: the beach with red rocks is great for a swim during the first and last months of summer. Come and take a look in July and August, to say you have seen it, but mass tourism and the heat do not always encourage a long stay... In this case feel free to explore the other beaches on the island...
  5. Go from the old harbour to Fira by donkey. It's a bit cliché... but it's a good memory! And it provides another opportunity to enjoy views of the Caldera!
  6. Visit a wine cellar and taste Assyrtiko and Vin Santo. All major wineries offer tours of the vineyard and cellar with a tasting of their best bottles. One of the best wineries on the island also offers tours of a large wine museum in the basement, with audio guide (!). Well worth a visit. Discover the island and the history of its producers in a different light.
  7. Watch the sunset at sea. Remember to book your trip in advance in one of the many travel agencies. You will enjoy the sunset more, in peace, away from the tourists who flood to Oia at this time of day.
  8. Hike from Fira to Oia through Imerovigli for the breath-taking views! You will discover the chapel which is featured on every postcard and you will walk between the white houses! 12kms separate Imerovigli from Oia, but they are really worth the effort, don't forget to bring a bottle of water before heading out to explore this path. If there is one walk you must do on Santorini, this is really it!
  9. Enjoy the local specialities. On the menu Domatokeftedes (fried tomato dumplings), fava beans, Greek salad with capers and local small tomatoes and fresh fish! We advise you to taste these dishes in a taverna at the water's edge or, better still, in one of the quieter inland villages.
  10. Sip a glass of Vin Santo with a view of the Caldera. But do not follow the crowd, trendy cafés and bars are to be avoided if you really want to enjoy the moment. You will find great places sitting between two white houses as you stroll through the narrow streets of Fira.
